EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The official ruled the case was “another example” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the new year, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a memorandum of understanding with US authorities.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
