In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Youth Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September uprising was triggered by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Discussions Taking Place
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
