Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and various factors around that, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the national team for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
