This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Here's a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when the couple move from the metropolis to the rural area for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying horror experience, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
